A new study allows researchers to analyze the environmental condition encountered on an individual planet and evaluate their potential as habitable locations.
Many scientists have tried to learn more about planets located beyond our solar system but run into issues as it is quite hard to observe the conditions present on the planets. Within the study, the researchers employed several data sets to understand and evaluate the habitability of planets that orbit around M dwarf stars.
Previous studies infer that planets located around M dwarf stars seem to be some of the most suitable locations for the discovery of alien life, and they tend to be quite common. Besides the usual traits, the researchers also took into account other aspects that determine the habitability of the planet, including the rotation and radiation of the stars.
It is also thought that the chances to find water reserves on these types of planets. During the studies, the researchers observed that planets with a thin ozone layer aren’t suitable for life since lethal radiation will reach the surface. Planets near young stars are also less prone to storing the vital water reserves that are needed for the existence of life.
In recent years many researchers have tried to learn more about the potential of alien life. By tracking down planets that are suitable for the existence of life, the chance to discover alien life forms will increase.
Other scientists are hard at work on the creation of materials that could allow future space colonists to establish colonies on planets like Mars, where the surface is ravaged by harsh conditions and phenomena. The Red Planet lacks the protective atmosphere that shields Earth from a high number of threats.
While SpaceX and other companies are working on vehicles that could take humans to Mars, the dream of a Martian colony is still distant. The study was published in a scientific journal.
