Breast Cancer Vaccine Helps Florida Woman

Mayo Clinic may release soon a new vaccine that is able to erase breast cancer in patients by killing the cells that are having the main culprit for cancer.

Lee Mercker is a Florida resident that discovered in March she had an early-stage of breast cancer. He agreed on trying the unknown vaccine on herself and see the development of the disease.

The patient said she had ‘DCIS stage zero’ breast cancer, which means cancer didn’t outgrow the healthy cells, according to First Coast News.

When the cruel diagnosis was revealed to her, she had three alternatives. She could undergo a mastectomy, and remove her breast forever before cancer expanded in the whole body, or a lumpectomy that removes the cancer cells only. The third option, which she signed for ‘on the dotted line that day’, was to give a try the new medical novelty, the breast cancer vaccine.

How Does the Vaccine Work?

Dr. Saranya Chumsri, an oncologist at the world-renowned medical center, said the vaccine gives a boost to the patient’s immune system to break up the cancer cells. The procedure requires additional shots and tests.

They always took your blood, you had a physical, they’d make your shot right there on the spot for you. It was three shots, all in a row, alternating arms, four shots, two weeks apart.

She adds that this vaccine should be as accessible as over-the-counter flu shot or pneumonia shot.

The patient underwent a mastectomy to exclude any risk of cancer spread. But the researchers kept the affected tissue to review the effects of the vaccine and draw valuable conclusions.

This method was applied to a second patient and showed favourable results in the fight with cancer.

Chumsri affirms that other stages of cancer also proved to be responsive to the vaccine trial.
