It’s been just reported that Jupiter has a new massive cyclone. NASA’s Jupiter spacecraft found the storm during a recent flyby, and according to the space agency, the solar-powered probe discovered this cyclone during the 22nd flyby back in November to collect data on the gas giant.
It soared 2,175 miles above the clouds. Besides discovering the storm, NASA also managed to keep the spaceship clear of an eclipse, and this is really important because it would have ended the mission.
Without enough sunlight, the probe could suffer the very same fate as the Mars Opportunity rover, according to data coming from CBSNews.
NASA team jumped Jupiter’s shadow
The rover reportedly lost connection following a dust storm that blocked the sun’s rays from reaching the solar panels.
The team managed to “jump Jupiter’s shadow” and then discover the cyclone.
The online publication mentioned above cites official notes and reveals that “The combination of creativity and analytical thinking has once again paid off big time for NASA,” said Scott Bolton, Juno principal investigator.
Bolton reportedly continued and explained: “We realized that the orbit was going to carry Juno into Jupiter’s shadow, which could have grave consequences because we’re solar powered. No sunlight means no power, so there was a real risk we might freeze to death.”
It’s also worth noting that Juno had first discovered nine cyclones in the north and six others in the south when it reached Jupiter back in July 2016.
