Using Moon’s oxygen supply
The Moon has a huge supply of oxygen, and this is a really valuable resource needed for future human missions.
This supply is not in the atmosphere – it’s contained within the dust that can be found on the lunar surface.
Experts are working hard to make it possible to live off-planet.
Back in 2019, there was a group of European experts who proposed an idea on how to extract oxygen from lunar regolith – this is a term that’s used to describe the mixture of dirt and loose dust that’s covering the Moon.
Teslarati reveals that these experts are taking things to the very next level with their research. They managed to build a prototype extractor to show how this technology would work.
Future deep space travel
If this turns out to have the ability to work, it will have massive implications for the future of deep space travel.
Such achievements could very well offer people access to vital resources that would allow for the establishment of long-term bases on the Moon and on the Red Planet as well.
“Having our own facility allows us to focus on oxygen production, measuring it with a mass spectrometer as it is extracted from the regolith simulant,” Beth Lomax, a chemist from the University of Glasgow in Scotland stated.
Lomax continued and explained that “Being able to acquire oxygen from resources found on the Moon would obviously be hugely useful for future lunar settlers, both for breathing and in the local production of rocket fuel.”
