Leaving Earth doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all these days considering the fact that our planet is under siege, and the invisible enemy called the coronavirus is claiming more and more lives worldwide.
It seems that a lot of people want to become an astronaut for NASA – it’s been just reported that more than 12k people have already applied to join the Artemis Generation.
According to the latest reports coming from Space.com this is a new class of astronauts who will help the agency return humans to the Moon and then reach outward to Mars.
This is reportedly the second-highest number of applications that the space agency’s astronaut corps has ever gotten, according to what NASA had to say.
Entering a bold new era of space
“We’ve entered a bold new era of space exploration with the Artemis program, and we are thrilled to see so many incredible Americans apply to join us,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine stated the other day.
He continued and said that “The next class of Artemis Generation astronauts will help us explore more of the moon than ever before and lead us to the Red Planet.”
NASA put out the call for a new astronaut class back in February and then, the anticipation was really high.
Following decades of flying in low earth orbit, NASA is again shooting for the moon, literally speaking.
This will be taking place with the Artemis Program, which is targeted to land the very first woman and man on the moon by 2024.
After that, the agency is hoping to continue on to Mars in the 2030s.
