NASA is shocked after its satellite discovered something mind-blowing for the second time in more than 40 years in interesting footage.
As you know, Antarctica is the planet’s southernmost continent where the South Pole is located. This frozen dessert is the home to about 1,000 scientists who live in the blistering conditions that can reach -90C at times.
They are trying to understand more about the history of the Earth and climate change, as well.
Express.co.uk. explains that the “Weddell Polynya, or Weddell Sea Polynya, is a polynya or irregular area of open water surrounded by sea ice in the Weddell Sea of the Southern Ocean near the Maud Rise.”
It’s been just revealed that this anomaly had re-emerged every winter between 1974 and 1976 before it seemed to have disappeared forever.
The online publicaiton mentioned above just noted that NASA experts were stunned when the satellites picked this up once more four decades later.
A giant mysterious hole in Antarctica
According to reports coming from Express.co.uk which cited the info from Tech Insider, it seems that the latter explained on their YouTube channel back in 2017 the following: “There’s a giant mysterious hole in Antarctica, scientists aren’t sure how it got there, but this isn’t the first time it’s appeared. The hole is a type of polynya, a region of open water surrounded by sea ice.”
They continued and said this: “But the Weddell polynya is unlike any other, while most polynyas form near the shore, this one is located hundreds of kilometers from the coast. Scientists first saw it in 1974, back then, the opening was as large as Oregon, but in 1976, the opening closed-up, seemingly for good.”
The video continued and it explained how the hole has been spotted once again.
