Elon Musk has promised to donate $1 million to a campaign that wants to plant 20 million trees around the world with the start of the new year. He changed his Twitter name to Treelon.
The CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, following hi, with a promise of $150,000 of his own. The campaign is called #TeamTrees, and it is spread by a YouTuber called Jimmy Donaldson – MrBeast – in collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation. The foundation wants to plant trees on every continent but Antarctica between January 2020 and December 2022.
Why is this project crucial for humanity?
As per a campaign website, #TeamTrees and the Arbor Day Foundation want to plant new trees due to the forest restoration which has the most global climate mitigation potential, if we are to compare it to all the natural climate solutions.
A 2017 study suggests that reforestation, which is the process of planting new trees, is the best way to keep Earth’s temperature from rising with more than 2 degrees Celsius. Trees take all the carbon dioxide from the air in order to grow through photosynthesis. Then, they release oxygen as part of the process. This means that, if enough trees are planted, they can absorb just enough CO2 to bend the climate change. But the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere shows that it’s not that easy.
But is there enough space for all the trees we need?
According to a study, if we planted new trees across 900 million hectares, they would get two-thirds of the carbon dioxide we got into the atmosphere from the past 250.
